How to watch ITVPlayer from abroad? (updated October 2017)

ITV from abroad with VPNITV is one of the best TV channels on earth, at least if you are a fan of popular TV series such as Britain’s Got Talent, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Emmerdale, Champions League matches and lots of other stuff. But, if you want to watch ITVPlayer from abroad you will have a problem because you need a UK IP address to watch it!

If you want to watch CBS from outside the USA, you need an American IP address, and the principle is the same for those who want to watch ITV from outside the UK. You need a UK IP address, and the best way to get it is to use a VPN service named PureVPN. A VPN is a secure connection that is established between your computer and a computer somewhere else. When a connection is made your activity online will seem to originate from the server you are connected to. The result when connecting to a server in the UK is thus that you get a UK IP, which again makes it possible for you to watch ITV from abroad.

This article has been updated in October to make sure that all information is correct and that this information will still work if you want to watch ITV from abroad.
To watch ITV online you now need to register on ITV.com. That is easy, just fill in the forms with your name, a password, and your email address, date of birth and a postcode in the UK. If you do not have a UK postcode, scroll down to the bottom of this article, and you will find suggestions for postal codes that can be used.

Watch ITV online with VPN

If your goal is to watch ITV from abroad, maybe Britain’s Got Talent, Love Island, the World Cup, Coronation Street or some other program, this is what you need. It will not only help you watch ITV from abroad, but it will also take care of your privacy online, and it will give you a real UK IP address. Hence you will be able to watch ITV live streams available online and of course use the ITV Player from abroad. There are several services offering IP address in the UK, but the best is PureVPN.

UK postal code to watch ITV online

ITV now asks you to enter a postal code when starting their live online stream to find out where you reside. We have tried with different postal codes, and it seems all that matters is that it needs to be a UK postal code. Here you can find some examples of postal codes that should be working: W1K 7AA – SW1A 1AA – SW1A 0AA – L4 0TH

Good luck and enjoy watching ITV online from outside the United Kingdom. If you want to watch BBC and other TV channels online as well, read these instructions.

Many people who travel overseas wonder if it’s possible to be accessing iplayer outside… the answer is here!

    • Just tried it again right now. I am not sure if all four postal codes are working, but I used the L4 0TH as I tried it now, and it was working. Also, ITV tries to find your location itself and normally you will get asked by your browser if you want to let ITV find your current destination. Do not let them, but rather add the ZIP code yourself, and it should be working! At least it does for me and for several other people who have read this article! Try again and write whether it succeeded or not!

I’m in the US using VyperVPN because I would like to download ITV player. From what I’ve read I would have to set up a UK Apple ID? Does that seem right?

    • I am not 100% sure about this, but it seems likely that you need to have a UK Apple ID, UK account, to be able to download the ITV Player app to your iPad/iPhone. This is very common strategy among TV channels who create apps for watching content, so I would not be surprised if ITV do the same. I don’t remember exactly, but maybe you can change the “nation” of your Apple Account a couple of times in total, but in general your account is registered to and limited to the shop of one given nation.

Just tested this on an Android device, and located outside the UK I could not download the ITV Player for Android. But, as I used my VPN subscription to connect to a UK server, and then I cleared all Google Play data and Forced it to stop, and then I opened Google Play again and then I could download the ITV Player for Android (and after that watch the content). But, this might be a bit harder using iPad/iPhone.

Hey Thomas you have been a great help! I wonder if I could ask you to describe in detail how to clear the Google play account info as you state above. I live in Canada and I am missing my emmerdale catchup episodes. I am using a galaxy s tablet.
        Cheers!!!

        • What you need to do is to have a valid VPN subscription to HideMyAss and have their application up and running on your Galaxy tablet. When this is done do the following:
          1) Go to Settings – Applications and find Google Play Store
          2) Once there Clear Cache and Clear data.
          3) Connect to the UK server in HideMyAss.
          4) Start Google Play again. Search for the ITV application, download it and run it!
          5) It should be working now!

Hope this will help you in detail.

My problem: I use HMA and have done so successfully in accessing BBC and ITV.
However, I’m now being asked to update my itvplayer app ( which I downloaded in the UK last year) and am unable to do so on or off HMA.
    Any suggestions, please?

    • Hello! Are you using an Android device? If so, the solution is probably to connect to a UK server using HMA. After connecting go to Manage Apps, open Google Play Store. Once there Clear all Data and Force Stop. Now you should try again to update your application! Hopefully it should work now…

I’ve been using the vpn trick for a while,
but was wondering if there is a way to
rent content outside the UK. could I set
    a UK bank account(ie Barclay’s) that can
convert my US Dollars to Pounds and allow
me to purchase content abroad? Would the same
work for iTunes? I have to jump through so many
expensive hoops to purchase UK iTunes Gift Cards.

  5. Christopher says:

PS. If you have android you can
    search different forums and can
easily download an iTV player as
well as the BBC iPlayer abroad.
Connect with your VPN and you’re
    good to go.

There hasn’t been any comments to this article for a long time. Is it dead? Does the methods described here still work? Don’t want to sign up for PureVPN if it doesn’t work, as I have read lots of bad stuff about them as a VPN provider. I would however love to stream ITV in Hungary, so please help me out!

    • Hello Ryan,
I just did a test with PureVPN, and it works perfectly with ITVPlayer on the ITV website. You just open the PureVPN application, then under Purpose you select “ITV (Faster streaming)” and connect. Once this is done you should be ready to stream ITV online as soon as you are connected (that should normally take 5-10 seconds). Do not forget that you can also use this to get access to loads of other TV channels in the UK and elsewhere in the world, so well worth the money. Give it a try, and write some feedback once you have tried it. Would love to here whether or not it worked for you as well!

      • Ryan says:

Thanks for your reply! Based on your comment I gave it a try, and it works! I even tried to stream ITV on my Android phone, and it worked there as well with the PureVPN service. I was especially happy about that, because I know lots of people get different error messages as they try to stream the ITV Hub on their Android devices, but it worked with PureVPN. Thanks a lot for the help!
