In front of the Champions League semi-finals!

The Champions League semi-finals will be played in the coming 9 days, and we have so much to look forward to. The first semi-final will be played tonight between Tottenham and Ajax, and tomorrow the first leg between Barcelona and Liverpool will be played. Are you excited? I for sure am!

If anyone would have asked me a couple of months ago if I ever thought that there would be played a Champions League semi-final between FC Barcelona and Liverpool, I wouldn’t have been very amazed. I probably thought Liverpool would drop out of the tournament before that, but still, they have some high quality players and I wouldn’t be very surprised. But, as Liverpool has gotten better and better throughout the season I now find their spot in the Champions League semi-final to be well deserved, and I do hope they will give Barcelona a hard job in both legs.

Will Sadio Mane score for Liverpool against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals in 2019?
Will Sadio Mane score for Liverpool against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals in 2019?

But, if anyone would have asked me if I could imagine a Champions League semi-final between Ajax and Tottenham, I would have said “Never.” Neither of the teams are super-good, and they are both kind of a few levels behind the top teams like Juventus, Real Madrid, Manchester City and all the others. But, both teams have impressed, and even though Tottenham barely got to the semi-final after a match against Manchester City packed with action, they still kind of deserve their place in the semi-final. But, based on their performances so far in the Champions League, the biggest surprise is Ajax. Not only because they have managed to get to the semi-finales, but because they actually deserve to be there based on their matches against Real Madrid and Juventus.

Ajax isn’t like Iceland

Many people will probably think that Ajax can be compared with Iceland when it comes to their success in the Champions League. What do I mean by that? Well, maybe you think they have followed the strategy of Iceland with a strong defense, and then a few attacks in every match and with some luck, they have succeeded. Well, that might be true about Iceland, but it is not the truth about Ajax.

Ajax has played colorful and happy football throughout the Champions League, and not only have they barely managed to score a goal or two, they have actually scored a lot of goals. They are playing an attacking football, and even though their opponents are supposed to be better than them on the paper, they have surprised us all with a strong defense line accompanied by a brutal and effective attacking line able to score lots of goals, even among solid teams such as Juventus and Real Madrid.

So, where are you gonna be tonight at 21.00 (that is when the matches start in Central European Time)? Well, I know where I will be, in front of the screen watching Tottenham play against Ajax. I do hope for many goals, and a lot of action. And tomorrow, when FC Barcelona will play against Liverpool, I believe we will be served lots of action and goals again.

Even though FC Barcelona might be the favorites, I can hardly imagine that they will be capable of stopping the fantastic attacking line of Liverpool consisting of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. They might be unstoppable with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez on the top, but I have a feeling Liverpool will be able to resist and hopefully, get a few goals as well which will make it a very hard task for Barcelona to get to the Champions League final.
