TunnelBear vs. ProtonVPN? Which is the best free VPN service?

TunnelBear and ProtonVPN are often of the top of the lists presenting free VPN services. But, which is the best of them? Which should you choose if you want to use a free VPN? We have tested TunnelBear and ProtonVPN, and here you have our judgment.

As you might know, we are quite skeptical when it comes to free VPN services. There are many free VPN add-ons available, but many of these are simply there to steal your data and to take away your real privacy. But, there are some free VPN services that are good. TunnelBear and ProtonVPN are both known as good and free VPN services, but which one is the best?

TunnelBear vs. ProtonVPN

It is important to know that TunnelBear and ProtonVPN are VPN services with a free option available. The free versions of both ProtonVPN and TunnelBear are limited. So, which is the best free option?

ProtonVPN vs TunnelBear
What do you want? A VPN registered in Switzerland, or a bear protecting you? That is the question!

The free version of TunnelBear

The free version of TunnelBear gives you access to the full version of TunnelBear. The only difference is that you can only use 500 MB of bandwidth. This is enough to watch 30 minutes of streaming on Netflix, or to read online magazines and visit normal websites for a couple of hours.

But, it also means that you can connect to all the TunnelBear servers, and they will not reduce your download speeds or anything because you use the free version.

Conclusion about the TunnelBear free version
The TunnelBear free version is exactly like the full version, except for the bandwidth limitation.

The free version can only be used on one device, while the subsription version can be used on five devices at the same time. But, that isn’t really a big difference worth thinking about.

The free version of ProtonVPN

The free version of ProtonVPN has no bandwidth limitations. But, they reduce the speeds of your connection, and you will only be able to connect to three different servers. Besides this, all servers able to unblock Netflix and other streaming services will be blocked if you use the free version. If you want to do torrenting, you will need to pay for the basic subscription.

In other words, the free version of ProtonVPN is good for encrypting your online activities. It is good for hindering that your ISP and others will spy on you. But, if you need a VPN for other reasons than this, ProtonVPN is no longer good enough.

However, if your goal with the VPN is to surf securely and encrypted, the free version of ProtonVPN should actually be enough!

Conclusion about the free version of ProtonVPN
A perfect solution if you want to encrypt your online activities. If you need a VPN to unblock Netflix, or to protect you while downloading or uploading from P2P sites, the free version is no longer enough.

The free version can be used on 1 device, while the other plans can be used on several devices simultaneously.

What is the conclusion? Is TunnelBear better than ProtonVPN?

  • The 500 MB of bandwidth from TunnelBear is not enough for anything.
  • The unlimited bandwidth from ProtonVPN is enough for anything.
  • If you first have to pay for one service, then we would choose ProtonVPN.
  • If you have to use one free service, we would once again choose ProtonVPN.

Why?

You can watch Netflix and download from torrent sites with TunnelBear. But, TunnelBear is blocked by Netflix mostly everywhere, and 500 MB isn’t enough to download anything. As a result, the options you lack in the free version of ProtonVPN cannot really be enjoyed in the free version of TunnelBear either (even though they are included).

The bear (the mascot of TunnelBear) is incredibly sweet, and he is making the application look really good. Unfortunatey, a cute bear isn’t enough to make TunnelBear win this battle against ProtonVPN.

These are our thoughts. Have you used TunnelBear or ProtonVPN? Are you satisfied? I would love to hear your comments and experienes!
