Was Big Little Lies season 2 better than season 1?

The second season of Big Little Lies came to an end on HBO a few weeks ago. The respsonse from fans worldwide has been quite divided, some loved the second season, while others couldn’t stand the second season. So, who are we to decide and tell the truth? But, if you are interested in how we think of the second season of Big Little Lies, read on!

Big Little Lies became an immediate success on HBO after season 1. It isn’t strange that the show became a hit, after all, they gathered some of the most amazing actors nowadays to take part. For that reason, viewers could enjoy the company of Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz, Adam Scott, Alexander Skargard, and several others. One would be a bad director to make a show with such great actors bad… or? How many movies have we seen packed with stars that still ended up being a disaster? Just think about all those New Years Eve, Valentines Days, and Christmas movies, packed with stars, but you have to suffer for two hours to actually watch the entire movie. So, Big Little Lies could have been a disaster. It wasn’t!

Big Little Lies season 1

As I watched the first season of Big Little Lies on HBO, I felt terrible. The show was great, but I got pain in my stomach watching the violence that took place in the marriage between the character of Nicole Kidman and Stellan Skarsgaard. At times it was so bad, that I didn’t even manage to watch. The first season was really dark, and even though it was entertaining, I still consider it a dark and hard to watch season. It was brilliant but dark… Then, the evil character died (was killed) at the end of season 1. What would the second season be about? How would the show go on?

Big Little Lies season 2

The cast for the second season remained the same, with one big difference – the arrival of Meryl Streep. She plays the role as the mother of Stellan Skarsgaard, and she has a conviction that her son really was a good guy. Maybe Nicole Kidman is the one to blame for all the trouble?

A few episodes was needed in the second season for the direction to be set. At times, I felt it was quite flat and almost boring, with the exception of Meryl Streep. Even though Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are great actors, they didn’t manage to bring life to the second season of the show. Who did? Meryl Streep!

I didn’t like her character (such an annoying mother-in-law is hard to imagine). But, Meryl Streep did such an amazing job in the role that I still had to enjoy it. She was so annoying, and the way she played the role was incredibly convincing. I didn’t cheer for her, but she was by far the highlight of the season!

Meryl Streep – The person who “saved” the second season of Big Little Lies

Towards the end of the season, the intensity got higher, but it still lacked the sense of intensity that makes you long for a new episode to arrive.

Big Little Lies season 1 vs Big Little Lies season 2

I cannot really draw a conclusion. The first season was much to me because of the brutality of the violence within the marriage, while the second season was kind of boring. Hadn’t it been for Meryl Streep, the second season would have been a disaster, but luckily she was there. So in the end, I would probably say that the first season was the best, but if you liked the first season, you will most likely enjoy the second season as well.

Have you seen both seasons of Big Little Lies? What are your thoughts about the show? Which season did you like the best?
