We have tested the ExpressVPN speeds in December 2020

Many people just buy a VPN subscription without knowing much about the VPN provider before they get started. Others decide to do some serious research and find out more about the VPN before they go ahead. To be honest, since most VPN services come with a 30-day full refund, there isn’t much risk involved if you just decide to give it a try, but if you’d rather do you research before purchasing an ExpressVPN subscription, take a closer look at our ExpressVPN review, and see the results below from our most recent ExpressVPN speed test.

Here you can see the results from all our ExpressVPN speed tests. The most recent test will always be presented first, but if you scroll further down the page, you will also be able to see the results from speed tests we have made earlier.

Important things to know about such VPN speed tests

It is very important to use a VPN with high speeds. If not, you can risk a giant drop in your Internet speed, which might cause buffering as you stream content on Netflix and elsewhere, and it might produce terrible download speeds, making it almost impossible to download content and to surf like any other normal person.

If you have a fast Internet connection and connect to a slow VPN server, you will see a giant drop in speed. In other words, your original speed will not help you get a better VPN speed. However, if you have a slow connection, then it might actually set a limit to the speeds you will get using a VPN.

That is why we always test our own original download speed before connecting to a VPN server in the start of each speed test, so that you can do a comparison of our speeds before connecting and after connecting. If you do a speed test before connecting and get speeds way below the connection speeds we receive USING THE VPN, then you should not expect to see VPN download speeds like we do, simply because your own Internet connection is limiting the speeds (and not necessarily the VPN server). Would you like to test your own download speeds? Our recommendation is that you visit www.speedtest.net to give it a try.

It is also important to understand that routers and WiFi networks might slow down your Internet speeds. As a result, using an Ethernet connection (cable) will often provide better speeds than using a WiFi connection. That isn’t always so, but it can often be so!

I will write a lot more about the speed test below, but if you would like to see a 1-minute YouTube clip presenting the speed test itself and also the different results, take a look at the clip below.

So we decided to give ExpressVPN a try before the big Christmas sales in December. Is ExpressVPN worth using? Is it still one of the fastest VPN provider on the market? Here you can see the results from our test.

But, what were the results of the ExpressVPN speed test?

The first important number is our initial download speed which was 513 Mbps. This should be considered a very good download speed.

LocationSpeed
Original (without VPN)513 Mbps
USA171 Mbps
Sweden178 Mbps
UK186 Mbps
Japan54 Mbps
France200 Mbps
Canada24 Mbps

What should you make of these results? It is important to understand that speeds may vary depending on the time of the day, and other factors. But, in general, these are very good results, with the exception of the Canadian server which only gave 24 Mbps. That isn’t a poor speed either, considering that you could even stream a 4K move online with this speed, but considering that it is 20x down from our original speed, it should be considered quite lousy.

The speeds in France, UK, Sweden, and in the USA are all splendid, and there are few other VPN providers able to provide better speeds, and very few are even able to compete with speeds such as these.

All in all, ExpressVPN should be considered a very fast VPN, and if you are looking for a VPN with great speeds, this is one you should consider. They have servers in almost 100 different countries, meaning that they cover the most “popular” countries in the world, once again making it ideal for those who want to bypass geo-restrictions, secure the Internet connection, and to enjoy their home-office without fearing for the safety of their data and private information.

ExpressVPN Speed Test January 2020

Here you can see the recording of the speed test. You can read more and see the actual results in typing below the video.

The ExpressVPN speed test results

Before starting the speed test, we had an initial download speed of around 500 Mbps. Just for the sake of understanding this number… to watch a normal video on Netflix, you need around 3 Mbps as a speed. If you want to watch a movie in ultra-high quality, 4K and all there is to it, a maximum of 25 Mbps is needed. So, are the ExpressVPN servers capable of delivering a streaming experience at the highest level?

UK server251 Mbps
Canadian server247 Mbps
Argentinean server46 Mbps
Indian server209 Mbps
Norwegian server214
German server241 Mbps
US server100 Mbps

How do you like those results? If you want to compare it with another VPN provider, take a look at the results of our recent HideMyAss speed test. If you do that actual comparison, you will discover that even though HideMyAss is a fast VPN provider, ExpressVPN is actually even faster. So, the results are really impressive, and we can safely say that ExpressVPN might be the fastest of all VPN providers on the market in 2020.

Maybe you say that we just write nicely about ExpressVPN to earn money. Not at all… the download speeds don’t lie. You can see, the speed on the server in Argentina isn’t at all as good as the others, but considering that we are located far away from Argentina, makes it a quite good speed after all.

ExpressVPN Speed Test December 2018

The basic download speed before connecting to any ExpressVPN server was 351 Mbps. I then connected to ExpressVPN servers in different countries, and the download speeds I got were the following:

  • Switzerland: 200 Mbps
  • United States: 76,5 Mbps
  • Australia: 70 Mbps
  • Brazil: 5 Mbps
  • United Kingdom: 183 Mbps

Some poor results, some average, and some very good.
