Sorry! This video isn’t available right now. – ITVPlayer error

Do you get an error message when you try to stream content at the ITV website saying: “Sorry! This video isn’t available right now.” What is the error message all about, and why do you get it no matter what content you try to stream?

I just wanted to watch an episode of Sanditon online on the ITV website, so I started my VPN, connected to a server in the United Kingdom, and got ready to stream. I didn’t get the ITV Hub is only available in the UK message (since I used a VPN), but instead, I saw an error message that said the following: “Sorry! This video isn’t available right now. Check out our Shows section for more great programmes.” You can see a screenshot showing the error message beneath.

Why isn't the video available at the ITV website? Nothing seems to work!
An annoying error message if you try to stream ITV abroad using a VPN.

At first, I didn’t know what was wrong, but then I made a wild assumption. Maybe this is the way of blocking VPN providers by ITV without really telling the user that their VPN (or SmartDNS or proxy) is the problem. So, I loaded a different VPN provider that I knew should work with ITV (ExpressVPN), connected to a server in the UK, and gave it a try. Do you know what happened? I didn’t get the error message anymore, and I was able to stream the content immediately.

Always up-to-date!
This article is always up to date so follow these instructions if you want to stream ITV without the mentioned error message.

So, what’s up with the “this video isn’t available right now” error message on ITV?

If you get the message and use a VPN, a proxy, or a SmartDNS service, that is 99% likely to be the reason. Do as I did, use the VPN services of SurfSharkVPN and give it a try instead. If it still doesn’t work, you can simply ask for a full refund from SurfsharkVPN (their refund policy is valid for 30 days).

Surfshark VPNwith 30-day money back guarantee

If you click the button above and sign up for SurfsharkVPN, you will get some special discounts, including 15 extra months for free if you purchase their 12-months plan! You can also use SurfsharkVPN to watch BBC online, access content in more than 10 different Netflix regions, and so much more!

After you have signed up with SurfsharkVPN, download their VPN client to your computer, iOS device, or Android device. You will find information on how and where to download their applications after you have signed up.

When you have installed the application, run it and connect to a server in the United Kingdom.

You can then restart your browser or your ITV Hub application.

If this method doesn’t work at once, I recommend that you download the Surfshark browser extension instead of using their main application for Windows. Install the browser extension and run it directly in your browser and connect to a server in the UK. This should work if you cannot make it work with the main application.

Find your show of interest (or live stream) and start watching ITV Hub online using a VPN that actually works with ITV abroad.

I got rid fo the error message on ITV, and I can now stream Sanditon and other ITV shows online!

There are lots of VPN providers on the market, and most of them are blocked by ITV. SurfsharkVPN has worked without stop for years with ITV, so you have the best VPN for ITV in your hand if you purchase a subscription to the service.

Hi, thanks for this tip! I’m getting the same error message so can only assume it’s a VPN issue. I tried to go onto the Surfshark website and it seems down – is it still functioning or is there a new recommendation?

I just tried it and I was able to stream ITV Hub with Surfshark. But, I do know that Windows and its browsers often cause more trouble, as more cookies are added to your browser, thus making it harder to actual fix this error.

A few things that I can recommend that will help you…
      – Download the Surfshark browser extension to your browser and connect to a UK server there (instead of using their main program). This did the job for me right now.
      – Use a browser and open a new window in incognito mode. Try once again.
      – If you have a Linux computer, just use the normal Surfshark application there.

But, the first piece of advice is the best and one that should get the job done immediately, that is, use the browser extension instead of the main Surfshark application.

I should also add that antivirus programs like AVG Internet Security can cause trouble as well. You can quickly check if such a program or another firewall or similar program causes the issue by disabling it for some minutes. Then you can try again, and if you can now watch ITV without the error (while using the VPN), the antivirus program was the issue.

Same error with ProtonVPN. I’ll try SurfSharkVPN, assuming that 1.5 years later it isn’t blocked too…

PUREVPN is not working either. Can you tell me if the VPN in the article will allow Channel 4 from abroad as well? Very hard to access Ch 4..

    • Thomas Stein says:

Just checked it and it didn’t work for me either. Thanks for letting me know! But, if you follow the recommendation here in the article, you will find a VPN that actually works with both ITV and Channel4 (just tested SurfsharkVPN with both of them). SO, give it a try if you feel like… It works with even more Netflix regions and more streaming services and TV networks than PureVPN!

    • Thomas Stein says:

Thanks for the reply. I just tested myself, and it is true, none of the ExpressVPN servers currently work with ITV. That is why I have updated the article to feature a different VPN that currently works with ITV.

The last time I was able to watch a show was Monday 2nd November 2020 UTC. I get that same message just after clicking the “play” icon. I’m using ExpressVPN and have tried all the UK servers, changing my ITV-profile postcode to match. Cleared cookies. Different browser. Incognito. Looks like I’ll have to contact ExpressVPN.

    • Thomas Stein says:

Hopefully, ExpressVPN will fix the error and get up with some new servers. Until then, I have tested a different VPN that seems to work properly with ITV, so check the article again and give it a try if you don’t want to wait for ExpressVPN to come with a fix!
