How to watch German Netflix abroad?

Germany is a country with almost 80,000,000 inhabitants. It is the center of Europe, and the capital of the EU (at least if you look at where the money comes from). But, what can German citizens do as they go abroad and look for a way to watch German Netflix abroad?

It is getting more and more common among people to look for a way to access their favorite Netflix region, even though they are somewhere else. It is quite annoying to discover that your favorite TV show cannot be streamed on Netflix as you go abroad, or that you do not have access to subtitles or audio in your preferred language. So, what can you do if you want to stream German Netflix abroad?

The solution is a VPN, but not just any VPN

To watch German Netflix abroad, you need to get a German IP address that will help you unblock German Netflix. But, if you just look through our VPN reviews and download an accidental VPN client, you will most likely be blocked by Netflix. They are out there blocking the IP addresses used by VPN providers, and thus, you will not get access to German Netflix. Instead, you will get the proxy and unblocker error message and be locked out from Netflix. So, what can you do to fix this? Which VPN provider(s) will help you watch German Netflix outside the borders of the country?

I have done some thorough testing to find out which VPN to use, and this is what I can tell you!

If you want to watch German Netflix abroad, ExpressVPN is the solution!

I have written articles about how to unblock Netflix for a long time, and throughout the entire period, the solution that has been working constantly with German Netflix is ExpressVPN. You can visit their website and sign up for their VPN services using the button beneath.

ExpressVPN is one of the leading VPN providers on the market, and I have also listed them as one of the best VPN services in general if you want to unblock Netflix. There are some other VPN providers good for accessing other Netflix regions as well, but if your goal is German Netflix, go for ExpressVPN.

How to watch German Netflix with ExpressVPN?

  • First, you need to visit the ExpressVPN website and sign up for their VPN services.
  • Then you have to download their VPN client to your computer, tablet, or phone.
  • Install the application, open it, and connect to a server in Germany.
  • Restart your browser or your Netflix application.
  • You are now ready to watch German Netflix abroad.

Do not forget that you can use ExpressVPN to watch American Netflix, Canadian Netflix, English Netflix, Dutch Netflix, and even Italian Netflix. You do not need another Netflix subscription to change your region, all you need is your current Netflix subscription and an ExpressVPN subscription.

More about ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN has servers in almost 60 countries worldwide. Once you have a subscription to their VPN services, you can easily connect to all their servers in all their nations, and there are no limitations on the amount of traffic you can use. And truth be told, you can actually use your single ExpressVPN subscription on five different devices at the same time. For example, I have an ExpressVPN subscription running on my Amazon Fire TV Stick, and it is connected to the USA. It is running all the time, and thus I can use the Fire TV Stick whenever I want to access American Netflix, watch Hulu abroad, and access other streaming sites in the USA.

At the same time, I can use ExpressVPN to secure my Internet connection and stream Italian Netflix on my computer. And yes, security is of the essence with ExpressVPN, and that is why you can enjoy features such as a kill-switch, and split-tunneling, and you can also surf with their military-grade 256-bit AES encryption.

VPN providers that don’t work with German Netflix

I have told you about ExpressVPN in this article, a VPN provider that will help you get access to German Netflix. But, do not forget that there are all the other VPN providers on the market out there that will not help you get access to German Netflix. Before writing this article, I tested VPN providers such as IPVanish, HideMyAss, StrongVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, Astrill, Cyberghost, and more – and neither of them works with German Netflix.

It might be that the future will bring changes to this and that one of these providers might work with German Netflix in the future. If that is so, I will do my uttermost to update this article and let you know about it. But, as of now (check the date this article was latest updated at the start of the article), ExpressVPN is the sole and superior VPN if you want to stream German Netflix outside Germany.

What to stream on German Netflix?

In the start of the article, I listed some of the reasons why people want to watch Netflix Germany abroad. The main reasons are subtitles, audio languages, and of course, the movies and TV shows available on Netflix in Germany.

The biggest difference between German Netflix and other Netflix regions is the amount of native content available. Once you visit Netflix in Germany, you will find a menu point saying German content. There you will get access to German movies and German TV shows. You may find some of this content in other regions as well, but you will find way more in Germany than elsewhere.

There are also times when you will find Hollywood movies on Netflix in Germany that you cannot find in other Netflix regions. That can be useful, and I remember a few years back when I visited German Netflix to watch all the Iron Man movies. Now that has changed, and movies always come and go, but German Netflix is still an interesting region if you want to watch movies from Hollywood that you might not find elsewhere.

Accessing German Netflix outside Germany in the EU

If you want to stream content on Netflix in Germany and live inside the EU and have a Netflix account registered in another EU country, ExpressVPN in itself will not be enough. How come? Due to the new data regulations within the EU, you bring your streaming provider and your streaming country with you within the EU. In other words, you can travel from France to Germany, but if your Netflix account is registered in France, you will still see the French content as you visit Netflix.com in Germany.

Or, if you have a German Netflix account and travel to Denmark, you will still see the content of German Netflix. In the moment you leave the EU, such regulations will stop. But, what can you do if your Netflix account is registered in a different EU country and you still want to watch German Netflix? It is very easy, and it will actually save you a lot of money. I have written an entire article on this, and I suggest you go ahead and read it right here.

But, if you want to the short version, this is what you need to do.

  • Use ExpressVPN and connect to a server in Brazil.
  • Create a brand new Netflix account (which is much cheaper in Brazil).
  • Delete your old Netflix account (registered in the EU).
  • Now your Netflix account is registered outside the EU, and you will no longer follow the “EU-regulations”, meaning that you will always access the content of the Netflix region in the country you are currently in.

Did you get it? If not, read the article above for more information!

Danke schön for your research, I am choosing between Surfshark and ExpressVPN, both have been praised for streaming I just didn’t know Surfshark doesn’t unlock German Netflix. But it’s way cheaper than ExpressVPN, so apart from the German Netflix thing how do you compare the two? If I just want to access USA content (and both of them do) is it worth saving the money and getting Surfshark?

    • Thomas Stein says:

It is true that Surfshark has cheaper packages if you sign up for a longer period of time, but the question might be whether or not you really want access to German Netflix or not. I have listed Surfshark as one of the best VPN providers for unblocking Netflix (click the link to read the article), so if you do not really care about German Netflix, it is a great tool. But, if you want German Netflix, and also the ability to unblock as many other streaming sites as possible in countries all across the world, you will probably do better with ExpressVPN.
