Which VPN provider deserves to get your monthly payment? Is HideMyAss a better VPN provider than PureVPN, or is the Hong Kong-based VPN provider PureVPN better than the UK based VPN provider HideMyAss? It might sound “better” with a UK-based company than a Hong Kong-based company, but is that really so?
Since I have started to mention where the VPN providers are seated, it is really useful to analyze the locations at once. HideMyAss is owned by Privax, a UK-based company. This makes it easier to reach and more accountable, making it 100% sure that it isn’t a scam. But, when it comes to VPN providers, you might not always choose the EU-registered company. Why is that? If your confidentiality is of the uttermost importance, then many people fear that a VPN provider registered in the EU will be forced to hand over any confidential information in case of need. Other VPN providers, seated in countries outside the EU and companies with data agreement laws towards the United States and the EU, will feel safer and be able to resist such demands for a way longer time. As a result, being based in the UK, HideMyAss might be a safer choice when it comes to your own money and the product, but if we speak of your privacy and encrypting your online activities, PureVPN is probably a safer pick!
But, who cares about this? Let us look at more important topics when comparing the VPN services of HideMyAss and PureVPN.

PureVPN vs. HideMyAss – A Price Comparison
Most people who purchase a VPN subscription don’t care much about privacy, nor about encryption, nor about logging policies. What they are interested in is to bypass certain geo-blocks and streaming regulations, and they want to achieve it without spending way too much money. So, if we compare the prices of PureVPN and HideMyAss, what will be the end result?
These prices are valid at the time writing, but they might change in the future, so visit both the websites to find their actual prices (in case these have changed)
|1-month||10,95 USD||10,99 EUR (12 USD)|
|12-months||49,95 USD||71,88 EUR (79 USD)|
|36-months||–||132,84 EUR (145 USD)|
Once again, these prices often change, but now they look like this. It is also worth noticing that the Euro is more worth than the USD, and that is why we added the Dollar prices next to the Euro prices, making it easier to compare the two providers.
As we can see, the one-month plans are quite similar in price, but PureVPN is a bit cheaper. The six-month plan of PureVPN isn’t worth anything, after all, the price is identical to the one-year plan. But, if you compare the prices of the two one-year plans, you will quickly notice that PureVPN is way cheaper than HideMyAss.
But, what about the three-year plan of HideMyAss? You can almost add three one-year plans of PureVPN for the same price, and it is also worth noticing that PureVPN often run special deals (if you visit their website and go to the price page and wait for a minute, or maybe try to close the browser window), you will often see pop-ups with special deals. So, when I gathered the prices for this article, they had a 5-year deal which would cost 125 USD for a five-year account. In other words, if you are in it for the long run, PureVPN is cheaper. If you just want a VPN for a month, the price difference isn’t really that big.
How to pay for the VPN?
When it comes to privacy, you will quickly see that PureVPN is a better solution when it comes to payment methods. With HideMyAss, you have to pay with a licensed payment card, PayPal, Amex, or so on. But, with PureVPN, you can also pay with such methods, but also with cryptocurrencies. As a result, your payment can be totally anonymous, meaning that they will have no clue who actually bought the subscription. It is important to notice, however, that there is no refund policy available for purchases made with cryptocurrencies.
Additional VPN features available with HideMyAss and PureVPN
There are lots of additional features coming with your VPN subscription. Here we will list some of the features and also whether or not it is included when you purchase a subscription to either HideMyAss or PureVPN.
|Refund policy||30 days||31 days|
|P2P (Torrenting)||some servers||all servers|
|Apps for larger platforms||included||included|
|Servers||190 countries||140 countries|
|Live support on the website||available||available|
As you can see in the list above, the two VPN providers are quite similar when it comes to what is included in your VPN subscription. But, then what is the big difference between the two providers?
Unblocking websites with HideMyAss and PureVPN
I will say that the big difference between HideMyAss and PureVPN is discovered when you try to unblock websites. While HideMyAss has to follow EU-regulations and they are not allowed to write about how they should be used to unblock Netflix, BBC, ITV, and other services. PureVPN, however, is outside of these regulations, and they make it clear that they can be used for such purposes.
But, it isn’t just about what they can write. PureVPN is able to unblock way more websites than HideMyAss. While you can unblock American Netflix with HideMyAss, you can unblock almost 10 Netflix regions with PureVPN (including American Netflix). And while you will be unable to stream Disney+, Hulu, and Amazon Prime with HideMyAss, you can stream all those services with PureVPN. These are just some examples.
There are NO streaming services working with HideMyAss that cannot be accessed with PureVPN. There are, however, lots of streaming services not working with HideMyAss that can be streamed with PureVPN.
If you get the quote above you will understand that if you want to unblock websites, you will do way better with a PureVPN subscription.
Which is the fastest VPN, HideMyAss or PureVPN?
Based on some recent speed tests, we were surprised to discover that HideMyAas has turned into a leading VPN provider when it comes to download speeds. But, what about PureVPN? The truth is that both providers come with quite similar results in our speed tests, which means you have little reason to worry if you decide to use any of the VPN providers.
Here you can see some comparisons of the download speeds we got testing both VPN providers.
|United States||140 Mbps||88 Mbps|
|United Kingdom||237 Mbps||177 Mbps|
|Brazil||103 Mbps||73 Mbps|
|India||121 Mbps||141 Mbps|
|Germany||57 Mbps||136 Mbps|
What can we make out of these results? Not much, except for the fact that both VPN providers come with very good download speeds, and that the results might vary a lot. So, even though PureVPN gave us better speeds in Germany during the time of the speed test, it might be that the next time we perform the same test, HideMyAss will do better. It works the same way the other way around. But still, both VPN providers come with very good download speeds, so there is no need to worry about these speeds with any of the providers.
The VPN applications – HideMyAss vs PureVPN
Which VPN provider has the nicest looking VPN applications? First of all, PureVPN is covered on more devices, meaning that they come with browser extensions as well, something that is very useful if you only want to use their VPN services to bypass geo-blocks in your browser. However, both providers are covered on Android, iOS, Windows, Macintosh, in other words, they will cover the most popular areas of use worldwide.
Above, you can see an image from both the Windows applications of HideMyAss and PureVPN. To be honest, I personally like the design of HideMyAss way better than that of PureVPN. The HideMyAss application looks fresh, and the donkey smiling, putting on glasses, and looking around, makes it kind of funny as well. The PureVPN application, however, is old-fashioned and not that fresh at all.
But, then again, I wouldn’t really care, since you don’t actually spend any time using the VPN application. You open it to connect to a server, and then you leave it behind and never really touch it again. So, it isn’t like a browser or a document editor that you use hours a day. It is more about minutes or seconds. It comes as a bonus that HideMyAss looks really nice, but I wouldn’t make it a judging factor when actually buying my VPN subscription.
PureVPN vs. HideMyAss – a conclusion
So, is PureVPN better than HideMyAss? It all depends on what you are looking for. If you just want to encrypt your online activity while checking your online banking at Starbucks, I wouldn’t care. But, if you want to unblock websites for as little money as possible, PureVPN is most likely better for the job than HideMyAss.
